You may have a problem with obesity, but that doesn’t mean that your weight has to define who you are. Don’t give up on your future. There is still time to turn your life around with weight loss surgery. Our board-certified bariatric surgeon Dr. Dahiya has helped patients just like you turn their lives around and enjoy a healthier, happier lifestyle with laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy.
Have you been told in the past that you are too heavy for LAP-BAND® surgery or gastric bypass surgery? If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is high enough that you cannot safely have laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery or REALIZE® Band surgery, don’t give up.
Laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy can be an effective bariatric surgery option if you are very obese, even if your BMI is over 60. Let us know if you have a high BMI or if you have any other questions about gastric sleeve surgery, and we will set up a time for you to talk with Dr. Dahiya.
How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Works
LAP-BAND® surgery and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery are the most well known bariatric surgery procedures. However, they may not be the best bariatric surgery option for some patients. Especially for patients whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 60,laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy may be safer and more effective for significant weight loss.
No matter how heavy you are, our board-certified LA bariatric surgeon Dr. Shyam Dahiya can help you decide which bariatric surgery will be safest and most effective for you. At your weight loss surgery consultation, Dr. Dahiya will educate you about your options and answer all your questions about gastric sleeve surgery.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Helps You Eat Less
Do you have trouble sticking to small portions? Do you need to eat more to feel full than other people? If you have trouble reducing your food intake, your stomach may have stretched from years of unhealthy eating habits. A larger stomach takes more time to fill up, causing you to eat more and more before you feel satisfied. This effect builds on the existing causes of obesity to make it even more difficult for you to lose weight. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a way of combating obesity with surgery, designed to help you eat smaller portions and control your calorie intake.
Simply put, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery shrinks your stomach. Sleeve gastrectomy is also called the stomach staple surgery because it involves stapling and removing about two-thirds of your stomach. The part of your stomach that remains is shaped like a tube, or sleeve, and holds much less food. Gastric sleeve surgery allows you to eat a bit more per sitting than LAP-BAND® surgery orRoux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Thus, you feel full after eating a normal, healthy portion of food, but you shouldn’t need more than that to feel satisfied.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Helps You Lose Weight
n order to lose weight with laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery, you must be committed to making a significant change in your lifestyle. This means dedication to a healthy diet and daily exercise. You may have had trouble sticking to a diet before, but with a smaller stomach capacity after vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery, it should be much easier. When you tried dieting in the past, you may have felt hungry all the time, like you were starving yourself. After your sleeve gastrectomy weight loss surgery, you should be able to eat much less and still feel satisfied.
While it should be less painful to control your portions after sleeve gastrectomy surgery, it will still be challenging. Losing weight is never easy, even after bariatric surgery. If you don’t stick to your post-surgery weight loss program, your stomach can stretch again and completely undermine the results of your sleeve gastrectomy surgery.
If sticking to a healthy diet and exercise plan sounds impossible, don’t worry. Dr. Dahiya and our team of healthcare professionals will support your and keep you focused on your goals. At your monthly follow-up visits in the year following your sleeve gastrectomy surgery, we will reinforce your diet and exercise plan and help you stay motivated. Our nutrition specialist Dr. Jose Mari-Elacion will help you plan healthy, properly portioned meals and make sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs.
Common Questions About The Gastric Sleeve
If you have more questions about how laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy works, feel free to contact us here.
Is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy the same as stomach staples?
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve surgery, is sometimes called stomach stapling because it does use surgical staples to shrink the stomach. However, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy involves more than just stapling. The surgical staples are used to seal off a sleeve, or tube-shaped section, of the stomach. Next, the rest of the stomach is excised (removed), leaving only about one thirds of the original stomach capacity.
Which is more effective, LAP-BAND® surgery versus gastric sleeve surgery (staples)?
Both laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery and LAP-BAND® surgery can help you combat obesity with surgery and get down to a healthier weight. However, you may benefit more from one or the other depending on your health, body characteristics, and other factors. At your bariatric surgery consultation, our board-certified bariatric surgeon Dr. Shyam Dahiya will help you decide on the best bariatric surgery procedure for your needs.
What is the recovery time for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery?
The recovery time for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery is comparable to the recovery time for gastric bypass and other laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedures—typically about 6-8 weeks until you are completely recovered. However, your individual recovery time depends heavily on your overall health and your body’s ability to heal after bariatric surgery.
One key difference between gastric sleeve surgery and other bariatric procedures is that sleeve gastrectomy patients often require less follow up care and nutritional supplements. Nonetheless, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is still major surgery, so we will keep track of your progress with monthly follow up visits after your surgery for at least a year. Talk to our bariatric surgeon Dr. Dahiya for more information about the risks and complications of weight loss surgery.
How much can I eat after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
Like other weight loss surgeries, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy reduces the effective size of your stomach so that you feel full after eating smaller portions. LAP-BAND® surgery, REALIZE® Band surgery, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery leave you with a small pouch that usually holds less than 15% of your original stomach capacity.
Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, on the other hand, is a less drastic reduction in stomach size. After sleeve gastrectomy surgery, your stomach will typically hold about 200 ml. This is enough for you feel satisfied after eating a healthy-sized entrée.
